The Mystery Of The Missing Bench !
Used piano benches are hard to find. When I am on piano tuning calls I often come across families that are using a kitchen chair for their piano. They usually say that the piano didn’t have a bench but they are hoping to find a used bench for it. They don’t realize that there are a lot more used pianos than used piano benches.
Pianos get separated from benches for a number of reasons. The most common is that the bench simply fell apart and was thrown out. This usually happens because the bench compartment got over loaded with music books. When they sat down, the books pushed the bottom of the bench out or the hinges ripped from the lid under the pressure. Decades of wiggling bottoms loosened the legs on some of the other missing benches. Last but not least, occasionally a piano owner will sell the piano but keep the bench as table.
